Windows 8 can be a game changer! But are you ready?

One of my favorite poems growing up was “If” by Rudyard Kipling that talks about lofty possibilities annotated with a loftier “if”. The Windows 8 launch last week reminded me of the poem as I was pondering over what Windows 8 “can” be “if” it gains some early wins in the consumer and enterprise markets.

The average user has at least 2 computing devices – a PC (laptop or desktop) and a tablet. As much as users would like to have one single computing device neither the laptop nor the tablet satisfy all of the needs like mobility, portable form-factor, easy touch screen input, and suitability for consumption and creation activities. The tablet is easily portable but is primarily a consumption device for reading and viewing online content like news, social media, entertainment and games. It does not lend itself to heavy duty computing or content creation activities that users have to rely on laptops for. The laptops on the other hand do not offer touch screen inputs and are not as easily portable as the tablets. Hence tablets are used primarily for light weight consumption activities and laptops are used primarily for heavy weight computing and creation activities.

The Windows 8 based tablet is a creation AND consumption device that allows users to seamlessly access their data in both modes. It can be used as a tablet or can be used as a laptop with attached keyboard and users can choose to use the traditional keyboard and mouse or the touch screen input. Another convenient thing about Windows 8 is that it runs an enterprise-ready operating system. That is good not only for end-users who can now easily access corporate applications on their personal devices and vice versa, it is great for IT organizations who can now apply security policies consistently across all corporate and personal devices.

Windows 8 can become the one all-purpose operating system and Windows 8 based tablets can become the one single computing device. They can bring down the walls between corporate and personal devices and bridge the gap between laptops and tablets.

How can Dell KACE help you with Windows 8? We recently refreshed our K1000 system management appliance and announced support for Windows 8, Mac OSX Mountain Lion, RHEL 6, SUSE Linux and Ubuntu Linux. As Windows 8 makes its entry into the market, IT administrators can be ready to manage and secure all their endpoints starting from day one.

Desktop Virtualization: What is it and is Your VDI Environment Secure?

Many of you are probably already aware that virtual desktop infrastructure (VDI) is the practice of hosting a desktop operating system within a virtual machine running on a hosted, centralized or remote server. To users this means access to their desktop from any location, without being tied to a single client device. Administrators are drawn to this model by the idea that this platform is more secure and easier to manage after exhausting the effort to set it up.

Virtual MachinesIT professionals often question whether they can lower the cost of VDI or simplify its deployment, but tend to overlook policy and configuration management of virtual desktops. VDI implies a guarantee to provide a virtual desktop that is more secure than a physical desktop and doesn’t require as much attention. Herein lies the misconception, that by simply implementing a VDI eliminates the need to manage IT policies and configuration of virtual desktops like that of a physical desktops and/or notebooks.

Wouldn’t it be nice to be able to proactively enforce IT policies and configurations in VDI environments, while also ensuring a consistent user experience without compromising benefits and security? Well, you can! KACE provides an innovative solution that allows IT administrators to easily and effectively address the adoption of VDI, and the management and security challenges it brings.

Dell KACE experts recently published a white paper, Extending Policy and Configuration Management to Dell DVS Simplified VDI, in which the challenges of VDI adoption are discussed and how the Dell KACE K1000 Management Appliance can help. Additionally, if you are considering a deployment of Dell’s Desktop Virtualization Solution (DVS) Simplified Appliance and want to ensure IT policies and configurations are enforced, the authors also discuss how the K1000 Appliance features such as tracking assets, providing updates, and managing and securing desktops can be easily applied to Dell’s DVS simplified VDI solution. Be sure to check it out.

Celebrating Two Years and Growing Strong!

We just marked our second anniversary since Dell acquired KACE. And, guess what? We’re still celebrating. Failed acquisitions are de rigueur for many high tech titans. Not at Dell.

Understanding that we’ve retained almost 90 percent of our employees, grown our workforce by almost 4x, and more than quadrupled our installed base of customers tells only part of the story. The real story is that in the last several years Dell has proven that it knows how to acquire and grow innovative software companies.

Importantly, that means that customers can expect Dell to deliver a steady stream of innovative, high value products from Dell; products that dramatically simplify their technology life and give them the power to do more than ever before. For long-time KACE customers, it means that we can spend more on R&D, more on global support and more on improving their KACE experience than ever before. Our commitment to client systems management, to cross-platform support and to easy-complete-affordable solutions has never been stronger.

This commitment to the success of our customers has resulted in tremendous progress for KACE in market recognition, product innovation, and most importantly, customer success.

To give you a snapshot of our recent milestones:

  • Built a 6,000-strong customer base – that’s about 13 new customers per day!
  • 71 percent of KACE users realize ROI in six months
  • Recognized as a ‘Value Leader’ in EMA’s Client Lifecycle Management (CLM) Radar Report for both enterprise and SMB environments

On this second anniversary, KACE thanks you, our customers, and we thank Michael Dell and Steve Felice for including us in your vision for Dell and continuing to invest in our business at levels we’d have thought unimaginable just a few years ago.

Keep an eye out this year for many new and exciting ways that Dell KACE can save time for you and money for your organizations. And as always, we will welcome as many of you as can make it to our annual User Konference in San Francisco. Hope to see you there!
